Make Glowing Skin Your Goal
Winter Skin Got You Down?
We’ve all been there: it’s mid-winter and your skin is dry, flaky, and possibly even more acne-riddled than any other season. There are a lot of factors that go into ruining your skin, but you don’t have to accept your fate while waiting for warmer days. At Aveda we are avid skincare enthusiasts, and we would like to share our wealth of knowledge with you this season. So let glowing skin be your New Year’s resolution, and let us know how the rest of your year is affected!
It’s Time to Change Your Skincare Routine
Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone how naughty you’ve been this season. Sleeping with our makeup on, using bar soap to wash our faces, picking at dry skin? We’re all guilty. But it’s time to step it up, ladies and gents! So read on and watch your skin go from boring to glowing!
Clean Up Your Act
The laziness must stop, friends. At the very least, you should be using makeup removers before bed. Whichever brand you buy, make sure it doesn’t have added oil, and never wipe using force as this can cause microabrasions. But if we’re being honest, your winter skin is a little more sensitive and deserves better than a cursory makeup wipe.
To actually get your skin nice and clean for your beauty sleep, you’ll need a face wash. So really designate some time at night to do this crucial step. We recommend using a makeup wipe first, then using an exfoliating facial wash. DO NOT use a face wash with anything that says it has beads. A recent study found that those small beads are causing a lot of pollution, so we try to avoid those. Kind of ruins all that healthy washing you just did, right? Our favorite face wash is a homemade one, like Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics™ Exfoliating Creme Cleanser.
Here’s a tip: wash your face more than once a day. This doesn’t mean you need to use your new facial cleanser more than once, as that can sometimes dry out your skin. The most effective method is to rinse your face with cold water in the morning, and use a facial cleanser after taking off your makeup at night.
Next, Moisturize!
Moisturizing in these dry months is really important. But how do you know if you’ve moisturized too much? Well, we have the answers. To really keep your skin smooth and soft, you should use a designated facial moisturizer twice a day. That’s right, time it with your morning and evening wash and you’ll be set for the day! Using a specific facial moisturizer will decrease the amount of pore-clogging, and will not feel heavy or oily. You can even find moisturizers that help with acne if you have it. We really like Botanical Kinetics™ choices of moisturizers. Check it out to find a quality face moisturizer in your price range.
Do you have oily skin? We understand that having oily skin can deter you from wanting to use a moisturizer. But believe it or not, you still need to. That natural face oil is not doing a great job of protecting you from cold wind and dry air, so check out Botanical Kinetics™ Hydrating Lotion that doesn’t make your oily skin worse, and will still keep you looking fresh!
Cooler Showers
Yeah, we know you don’t want to hear this one. No one likes to take colder showers in the winter, but hot showers dry your skin out. So, even though it might be hard, if you are having a problem with dry, flaky skin, try taking cooler showers and see how that changes things. And don’t forget to moisturize!
Drink Plenty of Water
It can be hard to remember to drink water in the winter as you’re likely not out playing sports, and the summer sun isn’t beating down making you thirsty. But it’s still incredibly important. Though you’ve likely been told your whole life that you should drink three 8oz glasses of water a day, they have recently found that it’s better to just drink when you’re thirsty. So in the winter, when you aren’t thirsty as often, we like to remind ourselves by drinking at least one water bottle a day. As long as you’ve emptied your water bottle by the end of the day, you’ll likely be hydrated enough. Keeping hydrated helps your skin stay plump and fresh from the inside out.
While we’re here, we might as well mention that eating healthy also greatly improves the appearance of your skin. Though it’s holiday season, try to get some vegetables and fruits in between cookies and eggnog.
Treat Yo’self
This is your official excuse to get a facial, everyone. We know you were waiting for a sign. Getting a hydrating facial can vastly improve that winter skin. So whether you get a chemical peel, a relaxing facial, or simply use a store-bought mask, now is the time. Make sure you wash your face using that cleanser first, then moisturize afterward. This will tighten your skin and keep it moisturized for longer. As usual, don’t go overboard with facials, as this doesn’t allow your skin time to heal; if you really need it, try doing one facial a month or every other week. This should keep your face fresh and ready for the coming spring!
