How to Become a Cosmetologist in ID

Many careers require training, education, and licensure, and cosmetology is one of them! The Idaho Board of Cosmetology regulates beauty professionals and schools to keep our community safe. They enforce educational requirements, sanitation, safety, and much more. It is legally required to obtain a license to practice cosmetology in most states, including Idaho.

Here are the steps you’ll need to take in order to gain your license and begin practicing!

  1. Have a Passion
  2. Get an Education
  3. Take the Exam
  4. Apply for Licensure
  5. Love Your Job!

1. Have a Passion

OK, so this part isn’t legally required, but it sure makes the job a lot of fun! If you have a passion for hair, makeup, fashion, and all things beauty, you might consider a career in the industry! It is very clear how much loving your job can make a difference in your overall happiness and the quality of work you produce.

Is the beauty industry in your future? Contact us about enrolling at Aveda Institute Boise and Twin Falls.

2. Get an Education

It is required that you attend 2,000 hours of training in cosmetology. This must be provided by a state-approved institution. The curriculum should cover these topics and more:

  • Haircutting
  • Hair coloring
  • Safety
  • Sanitation
  • Makeup application
  • Basic skin care
  • Chemical services

Learning is all a part of this beautiful journey. You will be good at and enjoy certain skills, and others will take you a while to master. That’s OK! We’re here to support you every step of the way. Enjoy the ride!

3. Take the Exam

The exam is given in two parts. You must take both a written and practical exam. The written exam goes over theory and is a traditional-style test. The practical test allows you to demonstrate your skills.

4. Apply for Your License

To apply for your license you must meet all of the requirements, pay all applicable fees, and pass your state board exam. You can fill out the application and download all the forms you need here.

5. Love Your Job

After you’ve followed all the steps to getting your license, you can pursue a career you love! There are a variety of jobs out there for cosmetologists, and we hope that you find your dream job. Contact Aveda Institute Boise or Twin Falls to find out more info about getting enrolled in our Cosmetology program!
